Back in 2004, when I was working as a junior copywriter at GJP of the now defunct Gee Jeffery and Partners, I was often summoned to the office of my Creative Director, Matt Litzinger. Although I worked hard to avoid the invitations, for some reason, it felt like I was always up for an award at the high school dance.
Some of our meetings were good, and others, well not so good. But as a junior, you always look for a mentor, and considering he had somewhat of an accomplished career at the time, I listened. To be honest, I don't remember a lot of what he said, because it was usually about what I was doing wrong, but there are things that still stick to this day.

Knowing what was going on around me was just as important as what I was writing. This topic arose when he asked if I had watched any of the The Lord of the Rings movie. When I told him I hadn't because I wasn't a sci-fi fan, he said I needed to watch the films. Not because I had missed out on those great Star Trek movies of the 80's but because as a copywriter, I needed to know everything about what was popular.
And so, this inspired me on a new journey. From that day forth, I tried everything in my power to devour myself in popular culture, soaking in Britney Spears and spitting out hobbits. So I not only watched the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, but I also watched the full Harry Potter series. And truth be told, Matt was right. To create great advertising, you need to be relevant to the market around you, and you can only be relevant if you know what is relevant.
But rather than just watching movies, I started to make a list of films that I watched and gave each flick a grade. And 10 years and 1000 movies later, I am here writing about the whole experience.
So what is the list? I'm glad you asked. But before I show you, please know that there were will be grades you agree with, and many that you disagree. Heck, I may even disagree with the grades I gave a specific film. My favourite film of the 1000 - Big Fish. My least favourite - too many to mention. Some may consider this a badge of honour for my knowledge of popular culture. But life is a scout's uniform of infinite proportions and one badge won't get you very far, even in advertising.
So how does one feel about reaching such a prestigious milestone? Inspirational. That's because the more I watch films, the more I inspired I become to write one of my very own.
